BRING A MUSTANG HOME

Are you ready to adopt or purchase a wild horse? Just follow these easy steps.

HOW TO ADOPT

Providing a home for a wild horse or burro is a challenging and rewarding experience. For qualified individuals, this is a unique opportunity to care for, then own, a mustang or burro.

  1. Visit an Extreme Mustang Makeover event.
    – Visit extrememustangmakeover.com to find a list of all the 2017 events.
    – Attend an event and watch available horses compete in a variety of classes.
    – Visit the BLM booth to discuss adopting a mustang and participate in the competitive bid at the conclusion of the event.
  2. Contact a TIP Trainer 
    – Find a mustang in training. View TIP mustangs currently available for adoption on the TIP Facebook page or find an approved trainer near you who may have mustangs in training. Use this map to find a TIP trainer near you.
  3. Provide proper facilities
    – For adoption, the BLM requires an outside corral with a minimum of 400 square feet (20×20) per animal.
    – All fences and gates must be at least 6 feet high for wild horses over the age of 18 months. Five foot high fences are allowed for gentled horses, yearlings, and burros.
    – Once gentled, the animals may be maintained in pastures or in box stalls with daily turnout.
    – Shelters should be at least 12X12 feet can be a three-sided shed attached to the corral, or box stall in barn attached to corral, allowing animal to move freely between the corral and shelter.
  4. Provide transportation
    – Adopters must provide their own vehicles or make private arrangements.
    –  Animal will ride loose and must have enough space to turn around. Trailer requirements can be found in the link below.

  5. Be prepared for payment
    – Payment may be made by cash, check or money order.
    – The adoption fee is the amount of your winning bid at an Extreme Mustang Makeover event or $125 for a wild mustang at a BLM off-range holding facility or through an approved TIP trainer.
  6. You are ready to take your mustang home
    – Once you have made payment and completed all adoption paperwork, you may take your mustang home.
    – All horses must be removed from the EMM event facility by the following morning. Personal arrangements may be made with a TIP trainer.

APPLICATION

You will need to fill out an adoption application from the link below. Please read the adoption requirements before you submit an application to determine if your facility meets all BLM requirements.  Include exact information about the length, width, and height of your corral and shelter, and the type of materials used in the construction. Applications cannot be approved until all construction or modifications are completed. Corrals must be 5 feet high for burros; yearlings and trained horses; and 6 feet high for untrained horses 2 years of age and older.
