Adopt a mustang:
April 1-15, 2022
Step 1: Get approved
Apply for an adoption through the Bureau of Land Management. Find adoption forms and details on how to adopt. Competitors must be approved by the BLM prior to picking up from an MHF Storefront.
Step 2: choose a facility
Approved competitors can adopt an eligible horse from any MHF Storefront location, Bureau of Land Management facility, or BLM adoption event. The number of horses available at each location may be limited, so competitors should contact the location prior to arriving for adoption. Find your nearest MHF storefront or BLM facility. Some examples of locations with upcoming adoption events or availability are listed below. Competitors may pick up from any location with available animals.

Horses must be adopted April 1-15. Horses may be mares or geldings. Horses for competing adults must be between the ages of 4 and 7 years old. Youth horses must be between 12 and 24 months old. Because horses are adopted to compete in this event, TIP trainers who choose to scratch their horse will not be able to utilize TIP to rehome their horse (they will need to be reassigned through the BLM).
step 4: complete the virtual extreme mustang makeover application
Complete the Extreme Mustang Makeover application to officially be entered in the competition. This form must be submitted to the Mustang Heritage Foundation by April 19 to be eligible to compete. Find the youth application here. Approvals will be sent out after April 19 when the application closes.
step 5: rules & regulations
Download the Rules & Regulations and review. Progress reports must be submitted during the 100-day training period to remain eligible to compete. Competitors must supply an active email address for use in important correspondence from the Mustang Heritage Foundation.
Step 6: train & compete
Trainers will be required to submit high quality video to the Mustang Heritage Foundation of their horse performing the maneuvers required in each class. These videos will be judged and awarded accordingly. See Rules & Regulations for more information.
